System Maps: An integrated, light rail network

The Task Force’s primary recommendation is to use existing rail corridors and rights-of-way to build a light rail system modelled on the O-Train. The system would be fully electrified over time using the latest available technology. Electrification would start in the downtown tunnel and convert from diesel to electric elsewhere, as funds and demand permit.

The network will serve Kanata, Barrhaven, Smiths Falls, Ottawa South and Alexandria. Ottawa Station (VIA) and Bayview Station would be major transfer points.

The network will include a downtown tunnel. In the west, trains will run to Kanata, Carp and Stittsville and through Barrhaven to Smiths Falls. The network will stretch to Mitch Owens Road in the south and run north to the Casino in Gatineau. In the east, service will run through Orléans to Cumberland. A spur to the airport would also be built.

Service could be extended to Arnprior and Carleton Place in the west and Navan in the east. Wakefield and Masson could also be included. The entire Transitway would be converted to electric light rail. Extensions from Earl Armstrong Road to Cedarview Road and from downtown to CFB Rockcliffe would also be considered.
