An innovative, incremental, affordable and environmentally sustainable plan

On June 1, 2007, the Task Force submitted Moving Ottawa: The Mayor of Ottawa’s Task Force on Transportation to the Mayor.

Report highlights

Deliver a comprehensive, innovative, incremental, affordable and environmentally sustainable region-wide rapid transit system. Leverage the strengths of the Transitway and O-Train, which would both eventually be converted to electric light rail. By 2017, and in some cases well before, service would extend to Stittsville, Carp, Kanata, Barrhaven, Smiths Falls, South Ottawa, Orléans, Cumberland, Alexandria, Gatineau and the Ottawa International Airport.

  • Re-establish an arm’s length transit authority accountable to City Council to manage transit operations and build the new system.
  • Bore an east-west tunnel under the downtown core where diesel-electric trains would switch to electric mode underground.
  • Reopen Union Station as the major downtown transportation hub.
  • Build a new bridge across the Ottawa River to the east of the downtown core to alleviate truck traffic congestion.
